Bonville Champions Trophy – Bonville

Sophie and Oscar travelled up to Coffs Harbour to contest the 2022 Bonville Champions Trophy. This exclusive invitation only, 72 hole, three day event was held at the Bonville Golf Resort (BGR) on November 30 to December 2. Sophie & Oscar qualified by winning their respective age divisions at the South Coast Junior Masters held at Catalina in August.

Day 1 brought good conditions and Sophie had a dream start with a 1 under par round of 71 that included 5 birdies. Oscar found trouble in the first round with 4 double bogeys and carded an 83. In the afternoon session of 8 holes, Sophie’s birdies turned to bogeys as she carded a disappointing 5 over and Oscar battled to recover from his poor first round.

Day 1 – Leaderboard

Day 2 brought tough conditions with constant rain. Sophie finished off the 10 holes of round 2 with only 1 over, helped by another 3 birdies, and thus carded a 78 for the round. Oscar produced a solid 2 over for the 10 holes. They then played round 3, another 18 holes in the same day and yes it was still raining. Oscar had his best round of the tournament with a hard fought 78 that included 3 birdies. Sophie had a lot of bogeys and shot a 79; those putts just refusing to fall.

There was a cut after the first 3 rounds of play. Only the top 9 girls and the top 15 boys would play round 4. Sophie made the cut finishing 6th after 3 rounds with 12 over.

Day 3 – Challenging course conditions

Day 3 brought more rain and saturated fairways and greens. Add 25-30 kms winds and a one hour delay and it was going to be another tough day. Sophie was determined to move up that leaderboard, and had a very nice even par round going after 8 holes (moving up to 5th), when the course was deemed unplayable and the round cancelled. Nonetheless it was another great experience with many lessons learned and a highlight of the year.
