International Women’s Day 2022 – A Celebration of Women and our Female Club Presidency #IWD2022 #BreakTheBias

At Club Catalina, we are proud supporters of International Women’s Day! Today, we take this special opportunity to celebrate our Female Members and Guests, Women in Golf, Women in our broader Community, and our very own Club President, Cathie Flynn.

It is our absolute privilege to share Cathie’s Story with you this International Women’s Day:

“As you know, International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8th March. It is a date to celebrate how far women have come in society, politics and in economics. Club Catalina’s ‘Women in Golf’ is also indicative of this journey. To help celebrate this day, I was asked to write my story as Catalina’s first female President and to show Club Catalina’s appreciation and support for ‘Women in Golf’.

In 2020 Club Catalina celebrated 100 years of history. It was clear from the 1920 pictures obtained for that period, 100 years ago, women were already participating and enjoying the wonderful game of golf. Unfortunately, at that time, ‘Women in Golf’ were not allowed to become full members but were classed as Associate members and as such did not have the same rights as their male counterparts.

When I joined the Club in 2010, Club Catalina had already made the positive change in their Constitution whereby women golfing members were no longer classed as Associate members but were classed as full playing (and paying) members of the Club. I was very impressed with this, as at that time, many golf clubs still classed women as Associate members. However, it appeared to me, it was still early days with this change, as establishing full gender equality in all areas of Club Catalina’s services and facilities for its Women members was still maturing.

Whilst this was not my primary motivation to become a member of the Catalina Board, once I became Vice President and more recently the first female President, I found I was well positioned to support Club Catalina’s continued forge forward with its gender equality initiatives. To that end, we now have women representatives on all sub-committees of the Board, we have renovated the Clubhouse with a prime purpose of making it more welcoming and comfortable for women members whilst at the same time still identifying areas that address our male colleagues’ requirements. We have implemented more medley golf competitions and still maintained our individual male and female competitions. Our Catalina Men’s Veteran’s Section last year unanimously voted for changes to their Constitution to align with the Club Constitution and become gender neutral. And more recently, with the assistance of our Director of Golf, we have established ‘Women in Golf Beginners Programs and also as part of our very successful Junior Program, a ‘Girls in Golf Program’.

In closing, there is still much to be achieved in the continued journey towards Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow however, I believe our ‘Women in Golf’, are well supported and appreciated by all our Members, Management and Board”.
