Tuesday 30th & Wednesday 31st January saw Bill & Sophie Eppelstun compete in the NSW Amateur, an event brings together the best Amateurs from across the country to compete for the NSW Title.

Tuesday & Wednesday consisted of Stroke play to determine the Stroke Play Champion with the top 32 Men and 16 Women, then going on to decide the matchplay Champion.

Here’s how it played out…

DAY ONE:

On the first day Bill got off to a great start, being 3 under through 9 holes, but a couple of errant shots led to a score of 74.

DAY TWO:

Day 2 again started well but just too many poor shots and he finished in 98th position out of a field of nearly 200.

Still a great performance competing in an event of seasoned top level amateurs.

Sophie started slowly on day one, being 4 over through 6 holes but found her form to eventually sign for a 5 over par score of 77.

Day 2 started with Sophie in 16th position, 8 shots from the lead.

THE CONDITIONS:

In extremely tough conditions she came out of the blocks again a little slow being 4 over on the turn but a stellar back 9 of 3 under, with a couple of missed birdie opportunities, saw her narrowly miss on the Strokeplay title by 2 shots after she signed for a 1 over Par 72 to finish in a tie for 3rd place.

Another huge step forward for Sophie in her development and it shows that with a better start to each round , she could easily have bought home the title to Catalina.

THE RESULT:

Sophie had now qualified for the Matchplay Component of the event.

In the first Knockout match she came up against Belinda Ji, a highly credential State Representative from the Concord Golf Club. Soph took this in her stride and played great to eventually win her match 1 up on the 18th to progress to the quarter finals on Friday 2nd February.
